In 2014 March we met the first time ever by chance at a trade fair in Germany. Ellie was attending on behalf of a Belgian wine distributor, while Imre represented an Austrian winery he was working for. About a year later we started to date, during which period we stumbled upon an abandoned vineyard in Sümeg in the Balaton region. The outcome of this adventure was our first ever HOLASS wine. Since then our portfolio has been growing with new wines, keeping an eye on working exclusively with local grapes and historically the most highly esteemed Hungarian wine regions. While the Burgenland region is officially the part of Austria since 1921, because of its cultural and historical background it is widely considered as part of the old Hungarian wine heritage. We own no cellar or vineyards, instead our production is based on close collaboration with friends and family, using only traditional methods. Each of our wines are a small unique batch, mostly single vineyard bottlings. Their names are geographic indications to their origin (can be a region, a town or a river). Our aim is to show the kind of wines these places can produce to our curious customers.
All our wines are made from grapes produced without the use of herbicides, insecticides and synthetic spray agents and fertilizers. All winemaking processes are naturally allowed to proceed without intervention or additives.
Our name [HOLASS] is the phonetic pronounciation of Imre his last name; Halász.
